Surrey Property Businesses Invited to Help Shape New Fabric First Skills Bootcamp

Businesses across Surrey’s property, retrofit and maintenance sectors are being invited to share their insights and help shape a proposed new Skills Bootcamp focused on Fabric First property maintenance and retrofit principles.

Activate Learning is currently exploring the opportunity to work in partnership with Surrey County Council to deliver a new Fabric First Maintenance Skills Bootcamp. The programme is designed to attract and train entry-level learners in the practical skills needed to support property maintenance, retrofit activity and sustainable housing improvements.

The proposed 10-week programme will help learners understand key areas such as building fabric performance, damp and mould prevention, safe maintenance interventions, compliant retrofit works, PAS 2035 frameworks and the prevention of unintended consequences from energy efficiency upgrades.

Why employer input matters

Property businesses, retrofit specialists, housing providers, contractors and maintenance professionals are being encouraged to complete a short questionnaire. The feedback will help ensure the Skills Bootcamp reflects real workforce needs, current skills gaps and future recruitment demands across the sector.

The programme aims to support learners to become employment-ready, with potential progression into property maintenance apprenticeships and wider careers within the retrofit and maintenance industry.

Areas the Skills Bootcamp may cover

Building fabric performance
Damp and mould prevention
Safe maintenance interventions
Compliant retrofit works
PAS 2035 awareness
Energy efficiency upgrades

Industry professionals may also have opportunities to support the programme as guest speakers, helping learners gain practical insight from people already working in the sector.

This is a valuable opportunity for Surrey businesses to influence future training, strengthen local workforce capability and support the development of healthier, safer and more sustainable homes.
