Spelthorne Litter Pickers, a local community group dedicated to keeping the Borough free of litter, has been presented with the King’s Award for Volunteers. 

The award was presented by Lord Lieutenant of Surrey, Michael More-Molyneux, at a ceremony held at Spelthorne Borough Council on Tuesday 15 April. 

Spelthorne Litter Pickers was formed in 2020 and organises volunteers for litter picking events throughout the borough. They create a sense of community involvement by including residents of all ages and local businesses in their voluntary work. Their aim is to make Spelthorne the cleanest, greenest borough in the UK.  

Created in 2002 to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee and previously known as The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service (QAVS), the Award has shone a light on the fantastic work of voluntary groups across the UK for many years. Equivalent to an MBE, KAVS is the highest Award given to local voluntary groups in the UK. 

His Majesty’s Lord -Lieutenant of Surrey, Michael More-Molyneux, said: “It was a pleasure to present this Award to the Spelthorne Litter Pickers. They carry out fantastic voluntary work in Spelthorne and fully deserve our thanks and the recognition that comes with this Award.” 

Shirley Lunn, Co-Founder and Chair of Spelthorne Litter Pickers, said: “We are very honoured to receive this prestigious award. We owe everything to our dedicated team of volunteers who go out in all weathers to keep our borough clean and safe for everyone. They are an amazing group of people and fully deserve this award.” 

The Mayor of Spelthorne, Cllr Med Buck, said: “I am delighted that the Spelthorne Litter Pickers have been honored with The King’s Award for Voluntary Service. Their passion and commitment to Spelthorne is truly commendable and we celebrate their efforts and the difference they make in our community. My sincere congratulations to the Spelthorne Litter Pickers.”
