Supporting Better On-Street EV Charging Decisions
Transport for the South East (TfSE) has published a new study designed to help Local Transport Authorities plan and deliver effective on-street electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
Developed in consultation with local authorities and industry stakeholders, the study provides an evidence base for the current on-street charging landscape across the TfSE area.
The research was approved by TfSE’s Partnership Board and is intended to help authorities make informed decisions when considering future charging provision.
No Single Solution for On-Street Charging
One of the study’s key conclusions is that there is no single “best” approach to providing on-street EV charging.
Instead, successful schemes need to reflect local circumstances and requirements, including:
- Street type and layout
- Existing parking arrangements
- Footway constraints
- The needs of different users
- Available network capacity
These factors can influence which charging solutions are most appropriate for individual locations and communities.
Practical Support for Local Authorities
The study sets out practical considerations to help Local Transport Authorities select appropriate interventions and identify governance and operational requirements at an early stage.
This evidence-led approach is intended to support better decision-making as authorities continue to develop EV charging networks across the South East.
Putting the Toolkit into Practice
TfSE is now undertaking a follow-on study with a small group of Local Transport Authorities.
This next stage will put the toolkit into practice and test how effectively it can support real-world decisions around the planning and delivery of on-street charging infrastructure.
Supporting the Transition to Electric Vehicles
The work forms part of TfSE’s wider activity to support the transition to electric vehicles and the development of a robust charging infrastructure network across the South East.
For local authorities, effective planning will be increasingly important as demand for accessible charging infrastructure continues to develop and different locations require different solutions.
